Chapter Sixteen

In the Land of Faery Past

Fiona crouched behind the fallen log and watched the road, waiting with a fiery impatience. All her years of planning had finally come to fruition. She had calculated her arrival in the past to coincide with the day she and her parents traveled to Lambridge Castle for her wedding. If she could stop the mercenaries from kidnapping her, then she would hide her true self behind glamour and tell her past self to change her fate.

It sounded plausible in her head when she concocted the scheme.

She checked the angle of the sun. It was still early in the day and the caravan had not yet passed by. She hoped by now Sean had returned Aoife to the human realm. It had never occurred to her to have second thoughts until she saw her daughter standing there with that wounded look on her face.

What about me, Mother. Can I stop you?

Her wavering voice sent a shudder of guilt through Fiona. For a moment she considered calling everything off and returning to the human realm, going with Sean like he wanted. But she had come too far to turn back now. Determination settled through her when she begged Sean to take Aoife back. She hoped he had made it by now.

How had Aoife ended up in Faery? Had she underestimated her own daughter so much that the girl found the portal she left behind in the trunk? Surely not. But then how else? Unless Sean brought her and Fiona knew that couldn’t be true. She’d trusted him to keep her out. And yet he hadn’t. He had instead been ordered by that wretched portal protection agency he worked for to return her to the human realm. They’d been trying to keep her out of Faery for years but she always found a way around them.

She knew she should have deactivated the portal when she left but she thought it would be a quick way to get back to the human realm if she needed it. She had been sloppy and it was inexcusable.

And what if Aoife hadn’t made it back to the human realm? Even if she did make it back, what if I’m wrong and the magic can touch her there?

Fiona shoved away the thoughts and turned her mind back to the task at hand. She had to trust that the information she found in the tomes in Deaglan’s workroom and Niall’s library were correct. She trusted Deaglan and everything he taught her despite the way Niall made him use her to get to Cian. She could forgive Deaglan for that because she knew what manner of man Niall was. She knew he forced the old wizard to do his bidding.

In the distance, she heard the distinct clop of hooves and the rattle of carriages. Her heart leapt into her throat. Now was the time. She nocked an arrow against her bow and waited, still crouched, her breath a ragged exhale and her muscles quivering.
